General Manager of the #6 Viagra Ford Taurus Over 20 years ago, Harry McMullen decided he wanted a career in racing. While flipping through a copy of “National Dragster” magazine as an employee of a truck repair operation, McMullen came across an ad from Jack Roush who was looking for people to work in his race engine building operation. After countless phone calls, Roush agreed to bring the Brooklyn, NY native aboard. McMullen moved to Livonia, MI in 1979 to work and learn, and begin a career in motorsports. At that time, Roush had fewer than 10 people working in one building in Livonia building engines for several different drag racing teams. McMullen learned engine building, tuning and race preparation while he worked mostly on NHRA Pro Stock cars that were sold and leased to other race teams. In 1982-83, Roush decided to try his hand at sports car racing with his own team and expanded to Trans-Am in 1984. McMullen broadened his experience by working on engines that were quite different from the drag racing motors he had been building. McMullen continued to try his hand in new projects, and in 1991 he got his chance to work in NASCAR when Roush asked him to join the No. 16 team with driver Wally Dallenbach, Jr. as a tire man and mechanic. He stayed with the team for several more years, and transitioned back into his area of expertise, when he became the engine man on Ted Musgrave’s car. In 1996, Roush called on McMullen to help get the No. 99 team up and running with rising NASCAR Winston Cup star Jeff Burton as driver. Under the direction of crew chief Buddy Parrott, McMullen helped the team develop into one of the most consistent performers on the series. McMullen was promoted to senior engine man in 1997 and he proved his ability to effectively manage multiple teams which is critical to Roush Racing. He remained in that position for half of the 1998 season until Roush saw an opportunity for McMullen to bring his leadership to the Nos. 16 and 26 teams, which were operating out of Liberty, NC He held the position of general manager for the remainder of 1998 and 1999. He currently holds the position of general manager for all four Roush Winston Cup teams, which are based in Roush Racing’s new shops in Concord, NC. |
