Introduction

Some people apparently either don't understand that you are supposed to slow down as you age Cover Pic or are simply too hard-headed to go along with the idea. At age 49 Mark is obviously one of those people. Despite "retiring" to a partial schedule a few season's ago, the Batesville, Ark. native is still going strong, still collecting top finishes and still giving much younger drivers lessons on how to drive a race car.

For 2008 Mark is scheduled to race Dale Earnhardt Inc's famous No. 8 in 24 races and the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Challenge. (Aric Almirola will fill the seat for the other 12.) Mark makes the move to DEI after his previous team, Ginn Racing, merged with DEI's operation. Moving with Mark to the new car is last year's sponsor, the U.S.Army. Veteran crew chief Tony Gibson will call the shots for Mark's crew from the pit box.

There is no doubt that Mark still has what it takes to be competitive behind the wheel. Despite running just 24 races last season, the Chevrolet driver posted a season that statistically was just as strong as any from the previous five seasons. Five top-five finishes and 11 top 10s combined with just two DNFs for a surprisingly strong average finish of 14.5. Among the Ginn drivers, only Mark was able to post a top five while DEI enjoyed a victory and 14 top-five finishes. So Mark should be in equipment that's much improved over last season.

Here's to a race car driver who refuses to act his age.
