MARK HOPES TO EXTEND ANOTHER STREAK

September 22, 2000
Mark is in the midst of one the many race winning streaks in his career. He is hoping to win his fourth consecutive fall race at Dover Downs International Speedway this weekend. He won his first race on the concrete oval on September 21, 1997 and has won the fall race ever since.

Mark wins Dover in 1999 His Dover win streak is not the first in his career driving the Valvoline/Cummins Ford. He won four races in a row in 1993 and became the sixth modern era driver to complete that feat. Mark posted wins at Watkins Glen, Michigan, Bristol and Darlington that fall. That four in a row record also began another streak in Mark's career. The win at Watkins Glen began his winning streak there. Mark won three consecutive races on the road course from 1993-1995.

He has also had a few streaks in his Winn-Dixie Ford in the Busch Series. Mark won four consecutive Busch races at North Carolina Speedway from 1996-1997, and will attempt to win three in a row in his final Busch race there next month. He was victorious in the fall race in 1999, and won the spring race this year.

He also has three consecutive victories at Darlington in the Busch Series after claiming the 1999 fall event and both races this year. He did the same thing at Lowe's Motor Speedway when he won the fall event in 1995 and swept both races in 1996.

Mark and Jack at Dover in 1999 Many people would find these records impressive, but Mark does not seem fazed by the success he has enjoyed in both series.

"It is kind of nice if you can set records like that and continue them but it is hard to do," Mark said. "We put in the same amount of effort every week and sometimes it works in your favor, and there are times when it doesn't. Throughout a season you go through tremendous highs and lows. Continuing streaks like these are definitely part of the highs, and seeing them come to an end would be part of the lows.

"You always hate to see a streak end, but I guess all good things must come to an end eventually. I just hope the current one does not have to end at Dover this weekend."
