MARK NEVER PASSES UP A BONUS

April 05, 2001
Besides winning races, the goal of every Mark is always looking for bonus points NASCAR Winston Cup team is to earn as many points as they possibly can in each race which will improve their final standing at the end of the season. In addition to their two top-10 finishes, Mark and the ViagraŽ (sildenafil citrate) Racing Team have done a good job of earning bonus points in each race.

Mark is only one of three drivers in the Winston Cup series who have lead at least one lap in each of the seven races this season. Leading even one lap is worth five extra points which can make a big difference by the end of the season. Mark has earned 40 bonus points so far this season. He has earned 35 points for leading a lap in every race, and another five points for leading the most laps at Las Vegas. Without those extra points, Mark would be 27th in the Winston Cup point standings, rather than 22nd where he is currently.

"My crew chief Jimmy Fennig has been very conscious about making sure we get our five points every week," Mark said. "Some of the races we've run well enough to lead laps on our own, and some of them he made the right call to pit after the leaders so we could stay out on the track to lead a lap. Considering I lost a Winston Cup championship by only 26 points in 1990, I will never pass up an opportunity to earn extra points. It may not be the difference between winning or losing a championship every year, but if I can move up even one extra position in the points it is important."

Considering Mark is less than 100 points out of 11th place in the point standings, his bonus points will be an important part of getting back to where he needs to be.
