On your “Mark”, get set, go!

July 25, 2002
Sliding quietly into second place, a familiar spot with a new outlook is the Mark on the run man driving the little blue pill car, Mark. Only this time Mark is not chasing Big E or the Wonderboy, but a more human Sterling Marlin. As his career reaches its twilight, the most deserving racer not to have won a NASCAR championship is in serious contention. Watch out!!

Everyone had written Mark off after an abysmal year last year. No was asking when Mark would win again, but when he would retire. With the media blindly sensationalizing the so-called young gun phenomenon, the cameras focused elsewhere. For a man who has never craved the media attention, this diversion has been the perfect recipe for championship success.

He truly showed his mettle at Charlotte in the closing laps of the Coca Cola 600 with the skill and expertise of a veteran driver, and with flair one might call un-Martinesque. Smooth as a butterfly, he stung like the final sprint of a Lance Armstrong mountain climb, in punishing fashion. Anyone who thought Kenseth was holding back doesn't know racing or Matt.

Something clicked at Charlotte for the No. 6 team, a light switch went on, and it keeps getting brighter. Over the past seven races he's had six top-10s, three top fives, and a victory. Mark is a man on a mission and you know what? The press is still trailing the young guns like bloodhounds. By the time the smoke clears, they'll wonder why none of them finish the season in the top ten. Okay, that pesky No. 48 car just might run the gamut.

Mark on the road I think this is Mark's year. Roush has the horsepower up in all his cars...well, all except Burton's. Please don't get me started on that one. Let's just say that I don't think Kim Burton will be crying on camera anytime soon. Mark has always been one of the best qualifiers on the circuit and now his team is gelling and building momentum as the season passes the half way mark..errr point, just at the right time.

You need a great owner, a great team, a great driver, and some racing luck to win a NASCAR championship. Mark is a driver's driver who has always been super focused, hard working, and in phenomenal shape. All the lugnuts are in place and properly glued for the No. 6 team to take home the big trophy this year. Did I mention his pit crew hasn't let him down so far? Keep up the great work guys!

In NASCAR, just because you think you deserve a title isn't good enough. It has to happen on the track. This year, away from the main aperture of the hyper-media, the Viagra team is on the move. It's really a shame Valvoline won't be around to join him for the party in New York because when I think of Mark, it's in that car. On the flip side of that, hats off to the folks at Viagra, for believing Mark could keep on keepin' on.
