| Jeff Burton looks skyward to check conditions, as he and Tommy Baldwin, Frankie Stoddard, Ward Burton and Jack Rousch pass time during a rain delay. Burton won the rain-shortened Pepsi Southern 500 while Mark finished fourth and made another substantial gain on Dale Jarrett in the points race. |
Mark took another huge chunk out of
Dale Jarrett's point lead with his fourth-place finish. Mark, who
trailed Jarrett by 314 points two races ago, gained 101 points
at Bristol and picked up another 45 points at Darlington. With 10
races remaining, Mark now trails Jarrett by 168 points. "This is
probably the strongest run I've had here since they repaved this place",
Mark said. I know it wasn't spectacular, but it was great effort
and a great run."
|
"We managed to stay on the long runs
instead of fading off. Actually, we got stronger on the long runs
and I think it was a good effort for the whole team." In the last two
races, Mark has gained 140 points and he noted if he makes another
major gain on Jarrett at Richmond, "the race will be on" for the
championship.
