Jeff Burton looks skyward to check conditions, as he and Tommy Baldwin, Frankie Stoddard, Ward Burton and Jack Rousch pass time during a rain delay. Burton won the rain-shortened Pepsi Southern 500 while Mark finished fourth and made another substantial gain on Dale Jarrett in the points race.

Skinner bails out of his flaming car Mark took another huge chunk out of Dale Jarrett's point lead with his fourth-place finish. Mark, who trailed Jarrett by 314 points two races ago, gained 101 points at Bristol and picked up another 45 points at Darlington. With 10 races remaining, Mark now trails Jarrett by 168 points. "This is probably the strongest run I've had here since they repaved this place", Mark said. I know it wasn't spectacular, but it was great effort and a great run."
Ward Burton (22), Bobby Hamilton (4) and Mark race three-wide for fouth "We managed to stay on the long runs instead of fading off. Actually, we got stronger on the long runs and I think it was a good effort for the whole team." In the last two races, Mark has gained 140 points and he noted if he makes another major gain on Jarrett at Richmond, "the race will be on" for the championship.
