Mark congratulates Ward Burton for his 2nd place finish After starting on the pole, Mark fought back from one lap down to claim sixth, giving him a finish of sixth or better in the last five Winston Cup races at Rockingham. For Mark, who also earned the pole and victory in the Oct 23 Busch Series race at the 1.017-mile track, it was a special weekend. We had a good run today," he said after the Winston Cup event. "We had a couple of problems and actually overcame them and wound up finishing sixth. We probably couldn't have done a lot better if we hadn't had trouble, so I guess it's a good day. We had a crew member get injured on pit road and we had several mix-ups. I slid through my pit on a green-flag stop, so it was just one of those days. We had a couple problems but it sure could have been worse."
Earnhardt slams into the wall in the backstretch "We had a pretty good race car, we just chased some stuff around today. We were pretty strong there at the end, but we had to come from way behind and to come from from 10th to sixth was all we could do." Mark said after he regained his lost lap he thought he could gain more positions. "We were a top-five car today and we sure did want to finish there," he said. "We got close to it, we overcame our problems and that's a good day when you can do that. I know at Dover we had a chance to whip'em and I knew today that everything would have to fall our way to do it and it didn't so we gave it our best effort and got a reasonable result."
With three races remaining, Mark is third in the Winston Cup point standings, 334 points behind leader Dale Jarrett. Mark, however, is only 88 points behind the second place Bobby Labonte.
