Mark and the ViagraŽ (sildenafil citrate)
Racing Team got back on track with a 10th-place finish on Sunday at
Watkins Glen. The finish marks Martin's 14th top-10 of the season, but his
first in the last four races. The finish moved Mark back into second
place in the championship race, only 53 points out of first place.
"We really fought all day for this finish," said Mark. "We didn't have all
that good of a car, but we hung in there and did what we had to do and I'm
proud of the ViagraŽ Racing Team and our effort here today."
Mark, whose car was the sixth fastest off the truck on Friday, started
the race from the eighth row in 15th position, based on Friday's qualifying
session. The car struggled early, with Mark dropping to 17th place by only
the eighth lap. Mark had worked the No. 6 car back up to 14th place when
the team came into the pits for the first time of the day on lap 25.
The ViagraŽ Racing Team came into the pits for four tires, fuel and to make
air pressure adjustments. As different cars were already running on
different pit cycles, Mark returned to the field in 18th position where
he was running on lap 37 when the day's second caution of the day was
issued. The No. 6 team opted not to pit and was running in 12th place when
the field went green on lap 41.
Mark was still running in 12th place when caution was called on lap 52. The
team came into the pits to take on fresh tires and fuel. Six cars didn't pit
and Mark was running in 12th position when the field went green on lap
58. By lap 59 the No. 6 Ford Taurus had worked it's way into 11th position.
On lap 63 Mark moved into the top 10.
Mark would hold position on the road course, weathering several cautions
during the final 27 laps, including the day's seventh and final caution of
the day with only two laps remaining in the race. The race was red-flagged
and restarted with only one lap to go. Despite having trouble with the
clutch and running low on fuel, Mark was able to hold position and move
on to the 10th-place finish.
The 10th place finish marks the 13th time in 15 races at Watkins Glen that
Mark has finished in the field's top 10. The finish also moved Mark, who
went into the race in third place and 109 points our of first, back into
second place in the Winston Cup Point's Championship - only 53 points out
of first place.
Mark and the No. 6 ViagraŽ Racing Team return to Michigan next weekend for
the Pepsi 400. Mark drove to a ninth place finish earlier this season
during the spring race a Michigan.
