A four-hour-plus race and
a two-hour rain delay made for a long day for Mark and
his Roush Racing team on Sunday. Mark started fifth and
was running second when the rains came on lap 34. Mark
was running second when leader Jeremy Mayfield was
taken out while putting a lap on Dave Marcis.
Mark led the next 21 laps before pitting under green on lap
139. Mark regained the lead from Jeff Gordon on lap 166 and
led for another nine laps. The leaders pitted under caution on lap 175 and
a 17.28-second pit stop sent Mark out in sixth place.
The crew continued to make adjustments to the car and Mark
lost positions while in the pits. Mark was involved in an
incident on lap 250 when Dave Marcis, Matt Kenseth, Rusty
Wallace and Mike Bliss got together. Mark dropped back to
17th because he thought he had a fender rubbing, but quickly
moved back up to 11th place. He was in 10th position when
the team made their final pit stop of the day. Unfortunately,
the last stop was their slowest of the day and Mark
rejoined the race in 14th place.
As rain continued to fall, NASCAR called the race 39 laps
short of the finish. Bobby Labonte got the win while Mark
finished 14th. "We had such a great car," Mark said.
"We had a bad day in the pits and that put us in a position to get caught
up in that wreck with Marcis. This car could have won the race but instead
we finished 14th. I guess it just wasn't meant to be today."
